General Store

A narrow box (about 2 inches deep) mounted on a wider wooden board inspired this store front view of a general store. Shevles and a counter were added, and fish scale roof shingles, made out the ends of ice cream bar spoon sticks painted gray.

Planing to exhibit this scene in the children's section of a library, I researched children's books about old fashioned general stores. They showed scores of different items people might need or want to buy.
Sacks of flour, sugar and coffee beans. Bushel baskets of potatoes. Crates of oranges, apples and cabbage. Jars of jams, jugs of cider and molasses. Cookie sheets and cake pans made from eye shadow trays Pots and pans, washboard, grater, coffee grinder, tools, baskets, rope, bolts of fabric, balls of yarn, candles, packages of seeds. Feather duster, mop, shovel and pitch fork, nails, paint, Lebanon sausage, sausages. Butter churn, wall clock. you name it, I tried to show it.

On the counter, antique style coffee grinder, roll of wrapping paper, basket of mushrooms, scale, bottles of milk, cash register (purchased).
This scene was always displayed with a children's book of a general store.
