Moroccan Living Room

This scene was inspired by the brass chain with four dangling balls, which had been given to me by my sister. This immediately made me think of a Moroccan living/sitting room with one of the  low-slung, loose pillow topped upholstered sofas with the dangling balls looking like lamps.

Now came the hard part. I needed to figure out a way to create a barrel vault ceiling. For months, I tried idea after idea. All failures. I finally thought of connecting wooden slates with fabric "hinges" that would make the necessary curve. Fixed in the curved position by joint compound.

The color scheme was determined by the "Oriental" rug I had bought on a whim at a miniature show. The sofa and pillows were upholstered with fabric "finds" from the thrift shop.

With a barrel vault ceiling, the room needed arched windows and an arched doorway. Once those were cut from the foam core, the room was "stuccoed" with dimensional joint compound.

The lattice windows were made by printing out a lattice pattern I liked on my computer and then carefully removing the white parts. Finding a scene that looked like it might be from Morocco, I also printed it out and backed the windows so there is a view.

The octagonal end tables were created from round wooden thread spools, sides flattened and painted with acrylic paints using color scheme colors. I topped them with round brass trays from my "stash." Remember the triple stand miniature ornament I mentioned in the Tea Party scene? Here it is fitted with brass trays and assorted living room touches. I strung blue and red beads to make the doorway curtain. The fireplace wall duplicates the one in my parents barrel vault ceiling living room. Assorted decorative items and a pierced topped box round out the scene.
